The 34th Annual International Conference of the Global Ecological Integrity Group (GEIG) concluded today. As one of the most prominent scientific and legal environmental events of the year, it successfully transformed the Chapel of the Colégio da Trindade into an international hub for high-level dialogue over the past four days.
Jointly organized by the University of Coimbra — through its Institute for Legal Research (UCILeR) and its Working Groups on Ecological Transitions and Vulnerabilities — and GEIG, the conference gathered renowned academics, legal experts, and global practitioners under the theme "Ecological Dignity through Law and Governance." The event stood out for its rigorous interdisciplinary and intersectoral approach, vital for addressing contemporary climate and ecological crises.
The institutional significance of the event was underscored by an elite network of global partners, including the UN Global Compact Network Portugal (with a strong focus on SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), the International Center for Comparative Environmental Law (CIDCE), the Ethics Specialist Group of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, the Center for International Sustainable Development Law, and the Ecological Law and Governance Association.
Beyond its academic excellence, the conference maintained its commitment to community engagement by offering free public admission to its sessions. The closing remarks delivered two major announcements: the Scientific Committee confirmed the upcoming release of an official publication compiling the key research and insights from the event, and looking ahead, it was officially revealed that the 35th annual conference in 2027 will be hosted in Amsterdam.
